What is the Best iPhone VPN. If you’re questioning whether or not you need to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your iPhone/Android, then chances are you already value your privacy. Your data is the hottest commodity in the world. While privacy is starting to get the attention it deserves, you need to use the tools available to you to protect yourself.

You can’t even use public WiFi to escape because it increases the risk of hackers and corporate surveillance. Installing a VPN on your iPhone is a great way to ensure that your device is more secure when using public networks, hiding your identity and private data. In addition, a VPN gives you more options for websites and content you can access online, wherever you are in the world.

What is VPN iPhone/Android
If the Internet is an open highway, then a VPN is the tunnel underneath it. Even if you take a slightly different route, you can still enjoy the sites you visit. However, you can be snooped on by advertisers and hackers, which is why a VPN is necessary.
Here’s what a VPN is How iPhone/Android works… When you connect to the Internet in the usual way (via a Wi-Fi or cellular network connection), you are browsing from your physical location. This means that anyone can get your IP address. It’s a lot like a return address on a letter. It makes you more vulnerable to trackers, hackers and cybercriminals.
On the other hand, a VPN hides your real IP address and provides you with a spare IP address in a remote location of your choice, preventing websites from knowing where you are. Not only does this prevent websites from tracking your iPhone, it also means you can pretend to be in a different country to bypass local restrictions or international geo-restrictions.
NordVPN is my first choice. Protection of your online activities, excellent connection and privacy protection, reliable and fast connection, global server coverage. Top-notch app support is the highlight of this provider. A 30-day money back guarantee is offered.
Encrypted web traffic isn’t the only reason you need a VPN. Through a direct, non-VPN connection to a website, your IP address identifies you not only to that website, but also to your geographic location. However, when you use a VPN, the IP address that other people see is the IP address of the VPN server you’re connecting to, not your own.
In addition to protecting your traffic, VPNs allow you to spoof your location and restrict tunneling through the local internet. Journalists and political activists opposed to authoritarian regimes have long relied on VPNs for secure communications with the outside world.
Of course, you may be breaking local laws simply by using a VPN. Russia, for example, has banned the use of VPNs, claiming a need to stop terrorist activity. China has also banned most VPNs, although some can still connect.
Spoofing your location can also get around another limitation. It’s not uncommon for online streaming services to offer content in one region, but not in another; Netflix and Hulu offerings vary by country. People in the UK can watch BBC programs for free, while the same programs require a subscription in the US.
Using a VPN to spoof your location can give you access to programs you wouldn’t normally be able to watch. But beware: location spoofing may violate your terms of service. In addition, companies like Netflix are cracking down on VPN users. When your VPN is running, streaming is usually not an option.
Auto VPN Configuration for iPhone
You will need to install a VPN app in order to automatically set up a VPN, and there are many different VPN services available. So your first step is to choose an app that meets your needs, and for our built-in selection we’re going to choose NordVPN, an all-in-one security app that allows you to protect all aspects of your digital identity in real-time. The iPhone VPN setup steps are similar for any app you choose. Here’s how to set up your VPN

- Install the application app.
- Open NordVPN and create an account. If you already have an account, please log in.

- Choose VPN.
- Click the button next to Status and make sure it’s green. Turn off your VPN when you’re done using it.
Manual VPN Configuration for iPhone
Your iPhone doesn’t have a built-in VPN, so you’ll still need a VPN provider to manually configure your network. You can find several free options with a quick Google search. That said, even if the free service feels like a good idea, we don’t recommend it as a long-term solution. We don’t recommend it as a long-term solution for the following reasons:
After choosing your VPN service, please check the official website of your subscribed VPN provider for the following information. If you can’t find it, you can contact customer service and they will assist you:
Once you have this information, you can continue to configure the VPN on your phone.
- Launch iPhone’s settings and select Settings.
- Click on VPN.
- Click Add VPN Configuration….
- Tap Type to select your network type.
- Select the network type – IKEv2, IPSec or L2TP.
- Fill in the Description, Server and Remote ID fields.
- In the Authentication section, enter your username and password.
- Click Finish.

1. NordVPN – The most secure VPN available
For: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux | Simultaneous Connections: 6 | Streaming Sites: Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube, Amazon, Hulu | Number of Servers: 5,600 | Server Locations: 60+ | >>Go to the NordVPN website.
NordVPN is one of the most recognized brands in the VPN space. Part of that brand recognition is based on its intuitive design, and the NordVPN iOS app is just as easy to interact with as its desktop client, with a similar design. If you’re new to the app and want to move from the desktop to a mobile iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad.
Just like the desktop client, Nord’s Android and iPhone apps open to a familiar blue landing screen map. Users can choose to select a country or automatically connect to the fastest server. NordVPN gets bonus points for its split tunneling feature, which allows you to select other apps that you don’t want to run over an encrypted VPN connection.
A real plus is the high-speed proprietary NordLynx protocol built around WireGuard, which is unique to Linux and iOS users. With some of the fastest speeds we’ve seen in our latest round of testing. Those who carry an iPhone or iPad can choose NordLynx and enjoy virtually uninterrupted connection speeds while remaining anonymously online.
This is good news for those looking to stream on mobile devices. Many do, especially on the move, to provide a reliable, fast connection. While NordVPN’s Netflix unlock is cumbersome and only allows access to libraries in Canada and Australia, it performs well elsewhere on Disney Plus, BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video.
Nord offers a large number of simultaneous connections. By allowing six connections through its network, almost all other providers offer five or fewer connections.NordVPN also offers a dedicated IP option for those looking for a different level of VPN connection. NordVPN offers a turn-off security feature as well as VPN access to Tor.
NordVPN‘s server network consists of more than 5,200 servers in 60 countries around the world. Unblocking content from most top streaming platforms, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc. NordVPN has a built-in defense against ads, malware, phishing threats, and other cyber hazards called CyberSec, which acts as a content blocker but runs at the system level rather than as a browser extension.
Its standard servers are sufficient for private web browsing, but more privacy-conscious users can connect to a selection of servers optimized for dual VPN use, P2P, Dedicated IP, and Onion Over VPN servers. NordVPN is an effective all-around VPN for data-consuming activities such as general Internet privacy and downloads.
We didn’t find any privacy leaks during our testing and found it to be very fast. The company’s annual price is lower than most other competitors. If you don’t like what you use, you can always get a full refund within the first 30 days.
I put this to the test to make sure you actually get your money back. At first, the support team tried to give me an extension, but after I told them I wasn’t interested in an extension, they immediately started refunding me. I got my money back within 4 business days. For: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux | Simultaneous Connections: Unlimited | Streaming Sites: Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube, Amazon, Hulu | Number of Servers: 1,700+ | Server Locations: 100+ | >>Go to the official Surfshark website.
Despite its customizability and robustness as a virtual private network, Surfshark’s iOS VPN app and Android VPN app offer a very intuitive interface for first-time users. Its four-tab design elegantly hides many of the privacy tools and connection options, highlighting the one-click connection button on the app’s login screen.
Quickly access one of Surfshark’s multi-hop connection options through its main location selection screen. One of its most promising features, it allows you to connect across multiple countries to hide your tracks without having to rummage through the app’s VPN settings, and Surfshark gets extra points for offering a customer support option that’s always available.
VPN providers have a wide range of applications supported that run on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, FireTV and routers. Other devices, such as gaming consoles, can be configured for Surfshark via DNS settings. We especially like the feature that allows you to whitelist certain apps and websites to automatically bypass the VPN. For some business purposes, this can be critical.
In addition to multi-hop, Surfshark offers two other special modes designed for those who want to bypass restrictions and hide their online footprint more carefully. Masquerade mode masks your VPN activity so your ISP doesn’t know you’re using a virtual private network. Borderless Mode “allows you to successfully use Surfshark in restricted areas.”
During our testing, we found no DNS leaks or IP address leaks and had no problems accessing Netflix. Unlike many other VPN providers, Surfshark doesn’t offer a one-year plan, and its best offer for a two-year plan is $2.49 per month.Surfshark doesn’t have a free plan, but does offer at least a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Although Surfshark‘s network is smaller than some networks, the VPN service makes up for this in functionality. Let’s start with the biggest win it offers, unlimited device support. It also offers anti-malware, ad blocking and tracker blocking as part of its software.

As ExpressVPN has always proven itself to be one of the fastest VPNs on the market. Its apps for iOS and Android are designed with a simplified approach. Designed to connect quickly, a button on its landing screen guides you through the connection quickly. The only additional option is the drop-down server location selector, which defaults to selecting your fastest nearby city.
Ideal for streaming media, games and seed downloads, ExpressVPN runs a large server network of more than 3,000 servers in 94 countries around the world, so you’ll have plenty of geographic diversity to stream content. It provides reliable access to platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer. One subscription buys you five simultaneous connections.
The rest of ExpressVPN’s options, its security and privacy tools, account and setup options, and support pages, are neatly tucked away in the upper left corner of the screen under a three-column icon, and they’re worth checking out.ExpressVPN includes an onboard IP address checker, as well as two leak testers and a password generator.
The company told us that its network is powered by TrustedServer technology, which ExpressVPN built to ensure that there are never any logs of user activity online and to provide private Internet access. ExpressVPN has a proven track record in the privacy world.
ExpressVPN offers a useful termination switch feature that prevents network data from leaking outside its secure VPN tunnel in the event of a VPN connection failure, and it also supports Bitcoin as a payment method. It’s not our favorite, but it adds an extra layer of privacy at checkout.
ExpressVPN offers a variety of protocols to choose from, including its proprietary Lightway protocol. Its other options include the OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP and WireGuard protocols. ExpressVPN automatically selects the best protocol, but you can manually choose the preferred protocol.

Advanced Technology Enthusiasts Want to take better control of your VPN?
Setting up a VPN manually on your mobile device obviously requires more time, effort and knowledge. This approach is best suited for people who want more control over their VPN experience, including the ability to choose specific protocols and customize settings.
What are the different VPN protocols available?
If you choose to DIY your route and set up your VPN manually, you’ll have to choose which VPN protocol you want to use. Therefore, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the different options available, as some VPN providers support multiple protocols.
OpenVPN
One of the most popular and recommended protocols, OpenVPN is a highly secure, highly configurable open source platform that can use AES 256-bit encryption and is particularly good at bypassing firewalls.
OpenVPN is available on all major operating systems, including Android and iOS. but it’s not supported on any platform, which means you’ll have to add it to your mobile device via a third-party client (we’ll explain how to do this in the next section).
PPTP
The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol is a general-purpose protocol supported by most operating systems and was developed by Microsoft and other companies in the 1990s. The protocol is fast, but it is considered one of the least secure options available today. This may be why iOS no longer supports it natively. We don’t recommend using this protocol, so we haven’t included it in the Settings section below.
L2TP/IPSec
L2TP stands for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol. By itself, L2TP is a tunneling protocol that offers no encryption whatsoever. That’s why you usually see it combined with IPSec encryption. All in all it is very easy to set up and is natively supported on many devices.
It offers good security, but there are concerns that the NSA has managed to crack it. Because it uses a single port (UDP port 500), it is also easier to block and is not as good at bypassing firewalls as OpenVPN. Also, because it’s a two-step process of conversion and encryption, it’s not as fast.
IKEv2
Internet Key Exchange version 2, jointly developed by Microsoft and Cisco, also lacks encryption itself and must be used with IPSec. It is a fast, secure protocol that is particularly suitable for use on mobile devices. Because it can move from one connection type to another (i.e. cellular to Wi-Fi) and still maintain a secure connection, IKEv2 is not as widely supported as the other products on this list, but it is natively supported on iOS, Blackberry, and Windows.
IPSec
IPSec can also be used standalone and is natively supported on iOS devices.
SSTP
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol is a Microsoft proprietary protocol. It provides a very secure connection and is good at bypassing firewalls, but its compatibility is limited to Windows devices.
Tip: For a limited time NordVPN is dropping the price to an insane $3.49 per month and getting an extra 2 months free with a 2 year plan (you can save up to 68%)! This is a limited time offer and you can check out more information about this offer here.
Manually set up VPN on Android phone/tablet with Android system
The setup process is more or less the same regardless of which VPN provider you sign up with. We recommend signing up for this service through their website. One of the payment plans is more visible than in the app, with prices varying depending on how many months you commit to at once. For Android, the Android device itself supports L2TP/IPSec, but not IKEv2. To set up L2TP/IPSec, go to: Settings > Wireless & Networking > More > VPN
Click the + sign to add a VPN and fill in the required fields. This includes the address of the server you want to use from your VPN provider, your username and password, and a pre-shared key. Then click Save. You’ll need to repeat these steps for each server you want to set up. You’ll need to grant VPN privileges to run it on your Android phone.
Manually set up VPN on iOS iphone/ipad
Same as on Android. Most VPN apps will walk you through the setup process step-by-step, and their functionality is similar. Again, we’ll use a specific app for this explanation, in this case NordVPN.
NordVPN has a strict no-log policy and no bandwidth restrictions. The application was created for all major computer and mobile operating systems and provides high-speed connectivity to more than 5600 servers in a total of 60 different countries. It’s easiest to sign up for NordVPN on its website before installing the app on your phone, and the service costs around $3 to $12 per month, depending on how long you book at a time.
L2TP, IPSec, and IKEv2 protocols are supported on the iOS device itself. To configure a VPN on your iPhone or iPad, go to: Settings > General > VPN > Add VPN Configuration > Type. Here you can choose between IKEv2, IPSec or L2TP.
Then you need to fill in the required fields, which include the server address you want to use from your VPN provider, your account name and password, remote ID (for IKEv2), and shared key (for L2TP or IPSec).
If your VPN provider supports these protocols, you should be able to find your remote ID or type in your account/customer information. Then click “Finish” to connect, and you’ll need to repeat these steps for each server you want to set up.
Using your credentials, install and launch the iOS app. Signing in with your new account, you will have to take care of some chores. However, the app will guide you through it, and you’ll need to grant NordVPN permissions to add a VPN profile to your iPhone. you’ll just need to click Allow when prompted.
Now, every time you click on Quick Connect, the service immediately applies VPN protection under the application’s default settings. This means that NordVPN automatically connects you to your local server for the fastest possible access. At this point, the map on the app’s home screen will show your current server and your phone’s status bar should display the VPN badge.
If you want to select a different server (e.g. a server in another continent), swipe up on the menu at the bottom to see the full list of countries/regions.
How to set up OpenVPN on your mobile device
We use a special section to configure OpenVPN because it walks a fine line between using your VPN provider’s client app for manual VPN setup based on the protocols your phone supports. As we mentioned above, OpenVPN is not natively supported on any mobile platforms, so you’ll need to install a third-party software application on your mobile device.
Before you do this, make sure your VPN provider supports the OpenVPN protocol (they probably do). From your provider’s website, you will need to download the OpenVPN profiles of the required servers (they will have the extension .ovpn) to your mobile device.
Make sure you know where the files are saved, you can download all of the providers’ profiles into one ZIP file, or download only the specific files you want (Android devices do not have the native ability to decompress files, so you will need to use a file manager program).
The next step is to download the official OpenVPN Connect app to your mobile device. openVPN Connect for Android or OpenVPN Connect for iOS. During setup, you’ll need to import a configuration file and enter your login credentials for the VPN service. iOS and Android setup instructions are available on the OpenVPN website, and may also be provided by your VPN provider.
Can I use a free VPN?
While there are many excellent free security and privacy apps available online, VPNs are unfortunately not one of them. Secure VPNs cost companies a lot of money to operate and keep secure, while free VPN apps are almost always full of malware data snooping.
While free VPNs are available, they never come close to the availability of paid services. They usually come with data caps ranging from 500MB per day to 500MB per month. You’d be surprised at the amount of data used for a quick scroll on Facebook, a few YouTube videos, and sending a few attachments via email.
Most importantly, they are not as fast as premium services. It’s worth knowing how free VPNs can make money from you, even if it’s not directly. For example, they may inject extra ads into your browser or even sell your data to advertisers for a profit.
But there’s good news: the booming VPN market is now incredibly competitive. With prices for even the best VPNs often dropping to less than $5 per month, we think paid VPNs, even Surfshark at just $2.49 per month, are definitely worth the investment.
Conclusion
A cell phone VPN is a great way to protect your privacy outside of the home, and be especially careful when connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi. While very convenient, it’s an ideal place for hackers to perform man-in-the-middle attacks and compromise your data, and a VPN ensures that doesn’t happen by encrypting everything you send over the network, even if it’s intercepted and unusable.
Another clever use of a VPN is the ability to stream content from other countries. If you’re on vacation and want to access Netflix, you may notice that your favorite shows are not available. By virtually relocating yourself using a VPN, you’ll be able to watch the content you know and love.
Whether you’re an Android user or an iOS user, you have a variety of options for securing your radio connection when traveling with these mobile VPNs. Some VPNs emphasize speed, while others emphasize security, and there’s a wide range of choices between them.
NordVPN is our #1 mobile VPN on this list. It’s the best VPN for Android and iPhone, but every user’s needs are unique, and no one VPN can offer everything. This provider protects your connection well. Offering fast speeds, security and privacy protection are the highlights. There is also a 30-day money back guarantee.
If you’re looking to save money, we recommend Surfshark. for less than $2.50 per month, you’ll have unlimited data and simultaneous connections, rock-solid security, and in-depth features that free VPNs don’t have. Access is fast and all major streaming sites are unlocked. Surfshark is the best value for money.
